Apple Cinnamon French Toast Bake

A comforting and delicious baked French toast made with apples and cinnamon, perfect for brunch or holiday breakfasts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 1 pound) French or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • Butter for greasing
  • Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Evenly spread the bread cubes in the dish to form an even layer.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Scatter the diced apples and optional pecans over the bread cubes evenly.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring they are well saturated, pressing down gently with a spatula.
  6. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for the best results.
  7. Remove the plastic wrap and bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 55 minutes, or until golden brown on top and the center is set.
  8. Allow to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving warm with maple syrup.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute whole milk with almond or low-fat milk. To make it nut-free, omit the pecans.
