A delightful and easy-to-make French Toast Bake perfect for brunch or special occasions using day-old bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of day-old bread (like brioche or challah)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups of milk
  • ½ cup of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • Optional toppings: fresh berries, maple syrup, powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt in a large mixing bowl until well blended.
  3. Tear the day-old bread into bite-sized pieces and gently toss them into the egg mixture, ensuring every piece is coated.
  4. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spreading the bread evenly across the bottom.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, though overnight is ideal for extra flavor.
  6. Let the dish sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before baking.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the custard has set.
  8. Serve warm with your choice of fresh berries, maple syrup, or a light dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

Use stale, day-old bread for best texture. Consider adding a splash of cream for richer flavor.
