Traditional French Toast Casserole

A comforting and delightful breakfast casserole perfect for family gatherings, featuring bread soaked in a rich custard.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf brioche, challah, or French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  3. Spread the bread cubes evenly across the prepared dish.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, pressing down lightly to help the bread absorb the liquid.
  6. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the bread.
  7. Allow the casserole to sit for about 10 minutes to soak up the mixture.
  8. Bake uncovered for about 40 minutes or until it’s puffed up and golden brown.
  9. Cool slightly before serving warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.

Notes

Use day-old bread for better absorption and don’t skip the soaking step for enhanced flavor and texture.
